1) SELECT THE RIGHT TREE
- Match the size of the mature tree to the planting
site, right tree in the right place
- Match the available water to the tree's water
needs
- Choose a healthy tree, one that has no circling
roots and no broken branches
2) PLANT THE TREE PROPERLY
- Dig a hole only as deep as the root ball and three
times wider than the container
- Remove the container, spread the roots, fill the
hole with native soil and water
- Topdress with 3 to 4 inches of coarse organic
mulch
- Remove all tags, stakes and ties
- Do not prune the terminal leader or branch tips
3) KEEP THE TREE HEALTHY
- Maintain a 4 to 6 foot circle of organic mulch
around tree trunk
- Do not allow the mulch to mound up on the trunk
- Water regularly, keeping the soil under the mulch
moist
- Stake only if necessary and remove after one
season
